Small form factor vs low-profile

  • Maybe I am a little behind in my terminology...

I know what small form factor is.  I have never heard of low-profile until today.  Are they the same thing? ...or does low-profile simply refer to a form factor smaller than the traditional full size form factor?

  • I believe small form factor applies to the size of the PC, and low-profile applies to add-on cards.

SFF is generally anything smaller than a standard ATX case. Low profile cards are used to fit inside small form factor PCs, though some SFF PCs may have low profile height PCI bays that you shoudl watch out for.

  • Small form factor: small overall case size, usually micro ATX motherboard support, can still support full size add on cards

Low profile: Case height is limited, full size add on cards will not fit

That is a low profile case since you can see the add on slots are smaller. Compare those slots to these full size slots:

     Hope that helps.
