is there a difference

I was looking at the dual core AMD X2's socket 939 because I wanted to upgrade to dual core and came across two processors that seemed almost the same but with a huge price difference.  The first one is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ which is just the processor so I can kind of see why it cost less than the AMD O......

Yep.  But I really wouldn't go with the Opteron if you're gaming...its more of a workhorse processor.  Its usually used in servers.

And more, the athlon x2 4200+ you are looking at is an OEM while the Opteron 175 you mentioned is a retail processor which has AMD warranty.

The reason for the price jump is because the Opteron has a bigger cache, and lower HT (less energy consumption... I think).

With double the cache, it will outperform it in benchmarks, but real world performance? Not my field
